Wake Up!

No posts since September? What? We no longer hate Friendster?

This ought to wake you up. Word from a pretty reliable source is that Friendster is negotiating to purchase tribe. I've heard this off and on for a couple of months, but there seems to be something to it.

As it turns out, Tribe Networks hasn't figured out a way to turn any money on this site. Apparently they've learned nothing from the old Internet model of giving something away for free and hoping to make money based on volume. Friendster was purchased by monster.com a few months back and finds themself in a financial position to take advantage of tribe's "distressed position".

I for one am not looking forward to the concept of "tribester", but what are you going to do?

Like I want to see the same freinds over and over again. I don't even get my messeges from there. Yeayas I hath been saved!!!

More than 2 days later, my supposed message from my friend has not shown up.

Just posted a bulletin board message... it's not there.

I conclude that all messages are falling into a black hole/wormhole of some sort.

Google Releases Orkut Social Networking Service

Google Releases Orkut Social Networking Service

By Danny Sullivan, Editor
January 22, 2004

Google has quietly released a social networking service called orkut, named after Orkut Buyukkokten, a Google software engineer who developed the project during personal time allowed to him by Google.

All employees at Google are allowed to spend twenty percent of their time working on personal interests, a policy Google has to encourage creativity. Buyukkokten had an interest in social networking and so developed his service, Google says. Now the company has decided to open it to the public.

The move comes in the wake of rumors that Google wanted to buy social networking service Friendster last year and just a day after Eurekster launched, a social network service that refines search results. Is this a sign that Google plans to use social networking for search?

"We have absolutely no idea. We're going to watch this and see how people react to it," said Google spokesperson David Krane.

So we'll see. But Krane also stressed that the system is staying very informal, somewhat similar to when Google puts a "beta" moniker on products like Google Catalogs or Google Labs projects that may never actually make it into Google as a long-term offering.

"This service is in affiliation with Google, but it's a product of this 20 percent engineering time and something we haven't made a formal commitment to," Krane said.

Krane said the service currently has no monetization -- no ads are appearing on it from Google, nor is there a fee charged to join.

And how to join? It's invitation only. At the moment, most of those within the system are employees at Google or know employees at Google. So while the system is open to the public, it's really that the public now knows it exists. To be part of it, you'll have to hope that someone you know is within it and invites you to take part.

So is the launch a sign that Google really did want Friendster, and perhaps has decided to go this route as an alternative? Google won't comment on the Friendster rumor, saying only that it does have an interest in social networking, that the timing of this product is simply coincidental and that its exact plans for social networking remain to be determined.

"We think [social networking] is promising, but we don't have any near term commitments to it at all," Krane said.

Friendster is the worst piece of shit that I have ever had the misfortune to log into! Email doesn't work, pages take forever to load, the system craps out ALL the time, and Friendster is USELESS for meeting people unless you already know them! I figure that since this tribe is in existance that you guys already know this. I mean seriously, what is the point of friendster? No posts, no blogs, crappy interests lists that don't link. Awww jesus, I was trying to make this short! Hmm then I'll just say that FRIENDSTER SUX ASS!

[start sarcasm]This is lovely...[end sarcasm]
----------------------------------------------
Question:
Why do I see an invalid user error when I try to view my friends or do other things on Friendster?

Answer:
This is an error caused when our server load is high. A very high user volume can cause our service to have difficulty performing certain functions and return an "invalid user" error or not show some recent changes or actions. There is nothing wrong with your account and no data has been lost.

We are currently in the process of upgrading our hardware and should have this problem addressed very soon.

Tribe Vs Friendster.

I must admit, I discovered Fster before Tribe... and really like it for a while... even though it was laden with problems. Since my shorter time at Tribe, Tribe have fixed every technical problem, offered new services and user interfaces, responded to criticism, incorporated those comments and revamped their entire main page not once, but twice. Meanwhile, Fster has yet to solve a single problem that has been daunting them. In fact, they seem to have more phony users than ever and have added new technical problems.
Today on Fster I got a new exciting error message: java.lang.NullPointerException, and I can't log in at all.

All this by way of saying:

Tribe... you guys are great.

Fster... you suck.

"Friendster Alert!

As we announced a few weeks ago, we will be making changes to the system to improve site performance. These changes will be launched this week. In particular, two new features will be introduced to empower you to select (1) the level of exposure for your full profile and (2) the level of messaging between you and other members. These two features will enable you to decide on the right level of privacy for yourself and will also help us address site performance. For more information, check our Help pages."

WOW! BIG DEAL! Why does it take a message I send to 1 person 5+ days to get to and another 5+ days to get back to me??? WHY CAN'T YOU @ FRIENDSTER FIX THAT? WANKERS!

You know what? In the last 3 weeks at least, I think I've been able to get on this site 2 times. Oh, I get e-mails telling me there are messages. But when I go to the link? it always says incorrect password. So I ask for a new one to be sent. AND THAT ONE DOESN'T WORK EITHER!!!!! I may not be able to get back on here for another month, so why even bother? This place is the worst! Am I the only one having problems here????

poitics on F-ster?

What's up on F-ster, are they attempting to get political? Check out the little F-ster blurb on my home page:

"What is Senator Kerry's favorite movie? Does President Bush love Rock n' Roll or classical music?
The 2004 Presidential candidates have joined Friendster. So keep an eye out for John Kerry, John Edwards, and George W.Bush!

To learn more about the candidates, get informed about the issues, and to register to vote, visit www.declareyourself.com "

IS THIS FOR REAL? Of course I checked it out and found several John Kerry's and too many W's and Edwards' to count. So what the fuck, are some of these "real" Fuckster endorsed profiles? Does this mean they're going to round up and kill the "fake" candidates? And WHERE'S NADER!?

Oh, yeah and WHAT'S UP WITH THIS? I got a bulletin from my buddy
ROCHESTER which read:

"I will be boycotting friendster.com as long as
they are running RNC ads. Perhaps canceling this
account as well. I hope some of you will do the
same."

Has anyone else seen these ads? I can't see any pictures when I'm on
F-ster these days.

Decided to log into Friendster and see what was going on. When I got there I saw this:

Stop the rumor mill!

There seem to be quite a few rumors floating around - Friendster deleting your friends, Friendster shutting down, Friendster charging...

We're not deleting your friends. We're not shutting down. And Friendster will never charge you to log in or join Friendster. Today, Friendster makes money from advertising. In the future, we will add premium services with optional fees, while keeping basic Friendster membership FREE!

Friendster will not use bulletin board posts to communicate with you. For the official Friendster word, look for Friendster Alerts on your Friendster home page.

Any time I try to log into friendster, or click any link on friendster, it takes FOREVER to do anything. Sometimes by the time I get to the page I want, I have to log back in because it took so long. Now I've cleared my cache enough times that it is not a caching problem. What is going on here? Am I the only one experiencing this problem? How can they possibly expect to run a business off a site that doesn't work??

I logged on to my friendster account this morning and found that some of my pics were not "approved" anymore.

What a crock of s%$t.

I was already pissed at them for being slow and a bit too restrictive in their policies but now...

Real pissed!!!

Anyway, hello again.

Tribe does so much more than Friendster, and does it all so much better. Friendster seem to get worse month, after month after month? What's their problem?

Just got kicked off friendster (for the first time)

They sent me a nice message about how my site violated the rules i.e. picture of an animal, (Hey that's no way to talk about your mother) and information about something other than yourself.

Friendster says they only kick you off when someone complains about your site. I'm sure this is true since my little site (22 friends) wouldn't be very noticable, and almost all of my friends (18) were obvious fakesters (Winona Ryder, Courtney Love, Jane Doe, Jimmy Hoffa, Jiminey Cricket, Sock Monkey etc.) with lots of friends.

The email I received said that Friendster actually enjoys some of the fake profiles, and that with 4 million subscribers they didn't have time to track down anyone.

What can I say? It doesn't make a bit of sense- but then neither does 4 more years of George Bush.

Jeez, you guys have way too much time on your hands. We all know Friendster sucks, so why not spend all that free time making tribe.net a better place to hang out (join the Tribe Ideas tribe, post some messages on your favourite tribes, invite some more friends...), rather than trying so hard to make Friendster an even more miserable place than it already is?

Sorry, I just don't get it.

Friendster Statistics

News release from the Friendsterwhore Institute of Statistical Trends
(F.I.S.T.)....

Since I've got access to my Gallery (again.. finally) and to a good chunk of Friendsterspace (hey, what good is a HUGE network if you ain't gonna use it?), let's have some fun and run a few stats: (assuming that the half of Friendsterspace I *don't* have access to is pretty much the same as the half I *do* have access to...)

In all cases, the first number is the result when doing a search on my gallery; it is followed in parentheses by the estimated percentage of Friendsterspace that matches that result.

People who indicated that they were men: 862,398 (41%)

People who indicated that they were women: 835,240 (40%) ... which means that 9% weren't really sure WHO they were...

People who are "just here to help": 327,533 (16%)

People who are looking for activity partners: 932,953 (45%)

People who are looking for friends: 1,339,616 (64%)

AND DAMN DAMN DAMN! Wouldn't ya know it... "Your personal network is temporarily unavailable"....
More stats later at the following URL:

I just i would get my two cents.....I hate to break it to everyone but.......it is with great regret that i say it is time to move on people. You have to let it go....all that anger, all that hate,we just have to put all of this ugliness behind us.We could find a new more deserving target..like say I don't know the president and all his flunkies and their foreign ploicy.I mean if we had tribe with 400 and some odd people bitching about the goverment it would be soooooo much more productive then playing the jr. high "I hate the them,we are cooler" game.I know it is hard to let the anger go,but nobody even goes there anymore......it was hard for me too,but the hardest step is the first one.

Good Luck.

Friendster Quickly Gathering Foes
By Daniel Terdiman 02:00 AM Nov. 21, 2003 PT

Friendster looks to be all the rage. Walk into any supermarket and you're likely to overhear milk stockers talking about it. It recently scored some big new venture capitalist funding. And its membership rolls are blooming.

But behind the fairy tale of an Internet success story is a disturbing trend.

Though it remains at the top of the online social networking heap, there are increasing rumblings that some of Friendster's earliest core users are unhappy with it. And now that they've found alternatives to the service, many are packing up and moving on.

The key issues behind the Friendster abandonment trend, according to users, are the service's inability to do anything about its habitual server lag problems, and its growing reputation for heavy-handed moral policies and unilateral decisions it makes on behalf of its members.

Friendster did not make anyone available for comment for this story.

"It was much fun once I was on (Friendster), friend-requesting everyone and amassing a surprising, to me, amount of testimonials," recalls Allison Lange of her early experiences with Friendster. "I loved logging in each day and seeing all my friends' shiny happy faces beaming up at me."

But Lange's own happy times with Friendster quickly faded.

"First of all, the service was always slow," she said. "Then, the 'Friendstapo' showed up and started killing fakesters" -- fake member personas that became popular on the service -- "auditing what photos people could use and censoring language. It all really disagreed with me on an ideological level, and because it made Friendster less fun."

Lange is not alone. Others talk of problems such as extreme difficulties getting the service to adhere to requests for membership cancellation.

"I tried to delete my profile on Friendster, but couldn't find any way to do that with their interface," says former member Kevin Gilmore. "I e-mailed their support to ask how I deleted my profile. I was told that they didn't do that (and that) if I didn't want to use the service ... I should just not log on. That was not good enough for me. So, I pushed them further. I told them I wanted my profile gone. They were rude. They were indignant. I threatened a lawsuit. My profile disappeared. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth."

Clearly, one of the problems Friendster is having is with its service and support teams. Its website lists a phone number to call with questions, but the voice message on that line refers all callers to departmental e-mail addresses.

There are some who feel that the service still suits their needs, especially when it comes to dating. That, of course, may be Friendster's strongest suit and what has so far kept it significantly ahead of competitors like Tribe.net.

"I haven't taken down my Friendster profile, nor am I likely to, for one simple reason," says a member who calls herself Mermaid. "Friendster actually does one thing better than Tribester, and yes, I call it that on purpose, and that thing is dating. Friendster is all about the hookup."

Heathen Michael Persephone, another Friendster devotee, agrees, and thinks Friendster does the best job of enabling her sex life.

"I like Friendster because it is more people-oriented," she says. "Tribe is more geared towards selling used blenders and looking for a job. I don't need to be reminded how many jobless people there are, or what awful things people will do for a buck.... What I want is the fantasy that we are all rock stars, that everyone's ass looks great in leather, that everyone is sexy."

Yet, despite the way Friendster succeeded so rapidly at helping people get a solid handle on what their networks of friends were like, it is likely going to have a hard time keeping those people happy unless it does a better job of listening to them and addressing their concerns.

One concern is that Friendster needs to lighten up and give its users what they want.

"Friendster ... lacked a sense of humor," says Lisa Pimental. "Many of us had created profiles for our pets, and we were having fun hooking up our dogs and cats. And Friendster came along and deleted those profiles."

Perhaps Friendster's biggest problem is that its list of competitors is growing, and that some of them, particularly Tribe, get much better performance reviews.

"Tribe.net shows all the polish of a team taking a good long look at Friendster, noting both its limitations and also what people on Friendster were trying to do," says Tribe fan Dennis Hescox. "Friendster seemed to have an opinion about how someone should use their system and blocking any other uses the community tried to use it for."

All of this is, of course, music to Mark Pincus' ears. Pincus, Tribe's CEO, is also an investor in Friendster, but he seems to realize that taking the moral high road on an online social networking tool is not the way to go.

"We don't want to make our network one that works well for one segment and turns off whole other segments," Pincus says. "I can't tell you we're never going to piss off some segment of our users. (But) we're trying to create enough sandboxes and segment enough so that people can express themselves and not be offensive to others."

The bottom line for Friendster may be that it misread the needs of those who have left for other services, like Tribe or Emode.

"The main issue with Friendster is that it treats every member as an individual, rather than tackling the much more complex issue of groups," says Katrina Glerum, who developed a social networking program for University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business. "I think Tribe is better, because it starts with the assumption that people are parts of communities, rather than that people are all lone gunmen."

finally, theres a place for those eternal greats so rudely excommunicated from un-friendster to have a home of their own:

http://deadcelebs.tribe.net

if any of you are a close personal friend of any of these great spirits, now dispossessed and wandering the ether, please let them know they will be welcomed..

I see all the disadvantages of the whole friendster thing, but i am really beginning to think we should like go out and meet real people in the real world instead of worring about"taking down the man".I mean we could put forth this much effort into changing the world instead of "getting back at friendster" for deleting something that was never real in the first place. Now I am not trying to rock the boat.If you lots of spare time and want screw with this Abrahams charater, then more power to you, but plaes don't delude yourself with these thoughts of grandeur about fighting to the good fight and getting back at someone who spurrned you.It seems a little....I don't know..highschool cliqueish or something. Why can't all these sites live some kind of peaceful resolve.Hell I hear people on myspace knockin' both of these aformetinoed sites(myspace sucks by the way..heh,heh).Now I am sure i will receive tons of hate messages liek "you stupid self-rightous asshole, just leave",but see that is the mentality I am trying to steer us away from.Anyway it was just a thought.Oh, and I am a hyporcrite by the way because i to have too much time on my hands. So if someone has a peaceful alternitive throw it out there.Because a lot of people here are still on friendster even thought it sucks......must be something good there....just have to weed otu the bullshit from the roses.Later....

Entered username and password.

Went to kitchen.

Microwaved something for dinner (leftover beef stew... yum.)

Emptied the dishwasher.

Came back to the computer to find my homepage with no network.

Clicked to get my messages.

Surfed Tribe.

Clicked on the picture of the person who sent the new message.

Surfed Tribe some more.

Discovered that my connection to him was unavailable.

Clicked back.

Surfed tribe even more. Posted a message.

Clicked reply.

Sent the guy a short note.

Surfed Tribe while I waited for it to send.

Clicked home.

Surfed tribe and wrote this message while I waited for my homepage to load.

It finally has my network. Good for it.

Tribe is responding slowly today, and I'm pretty sure we don't have nearly as many users here as friendster has. Are there any informed opinions here about how well tribe would hold up to the kind of load friendster has? I'd love to see it perform better than friendster does.

Hi, Ryan the Friendster Slut here...

Came across a website ve3ry much like friendster which is brand new and set up by Jim Young and James Hong, the two guys who were behind the hugely successful "Am I Hot or Not?" website (remember that one?). You have an opportunity to get in on the ground floor here!

Click on this link to go to the site which is called Yafro:

http://www.yafro.com/k/?i=c34f302p8u9424h

It will give you access to my contact information
and you can also see my profile there.

Spread the word, let's start yet another social network!

In my short time on here, I have found that people are alot nicer. Friendster had a pretty superfical feel to it in how people wrote about themselves and others. I do not know if I am the only one who thinks this or not. Anyone notice that? I like tribe alot more. It is cool getting all my messages and it is really great to not get notices for ones I already read weeks ago (like on friendster)and all my messages go through and do not disappear when I try to send them. Go tribe :)

if you're planning on participating in the "exodus" being discussed on this board, please read this.

there are a number of sleeper profiles, as well as realsters who have had it, who are going to be revealed as space invaders at some time in the near future. this is a response by the invaders to the deletion of the original "space invader". the sleepers are busy establishing themselves and their networks, and when the time is right (mwahahaha) they will reveal themselves. you never know who might be one of them...

we are calling on all who are down with the fakester cause to pilot a kamikaze space invader or 2 or 3 or 10, preferably by first creating a sleeper OR converting their own profile into a space invader, which will surely be deleted.

if you're leaving anyway, why not help the aliens take over? think about it... if you want more info, contact playerzero_78 (at) yahoo.

they're disguised as real people, living among us. boring people. but lurking beneath, waiting to reveal themselves, two bit video game characters. like "V" but different. mainly in that they're just friendster profiles, and they don't necessarily eat rodents.

if anyone would like to pilot a space invader, there are pics up on the friendsterrevolution yahoo site: photos > fakester revolutionaries > invasion .

if anyone has a better place to store the pics, the contact is playerzero_78@yahoo.com .

after only three short weeks, having not quite broken the 100 friend mark (but having broken the 1,000,000 in network mark), space invader has joined the ranks of the fallen elite. she was brave and dedicated, and her interests included "moving left, moving right, and firing missiles."

hmmm... how fun would it be to invade friendster with space invader clones?

input?

FRIENDSTER CHALLENGE #1.

Hey, there's 2.7 million people on Friendster; let's have some fun :-) ...

I issue a challenge to those members of the Friendster Sucks tribe who still have friendster accounts (even if you are leaving October 31st; hey, why not go out with a bang!), and to all my fellow Friendster whores:

The winner of this challenge gets a glowing,
over-the-top testimonial from yours truly (what,
you were expecting a washer-drier combo?).

The challenge: to have seven people in your
personal network (that is, one degree of
separation from you) where one is from EACH of the
seven continents:

1. North America
2. South America
3. Europe
4. Africa
5. Asia
6. Australia
7. Antarctica (YES, Antarctica!)

I saw a report on some TV news program that 2 million people are on friendster?
What the fuck good is an online community where people link up to their pre-existing friends then never check their accounts?
I can see 1.2 million people. I see no point to degrees of separation at this point.
Fuck em.

I blame friendster for the premature death of my cat, Mr. Chen.
After hours of exhaustive messaging and late night surfing, I think that Mr. Chen could no longer take the amount of information(and recreation I might add) that was being forced upon him.
So it was, last month at 4:00am, when we had both been writting a message on friendster to a Leather Daddy(named Tim) from Boston, Mr. Chen got up off the desk and left the room. Well, one hour later I got up to go and check on him,and to my horror, Mr. Chen was laying on the floor with his little tounge hanging out the side...That was the last time I ever used Friendster, and to this day I still dont know if Tim, the Leather Daddy, had ever replied!!

The Friendsters Anonymous profile, a Fakester spoof of a twelve-step meeting, was whacked by Abrams and Company today. Gone. Adieu.

Anyways, I did send them a message last week telling them that they needed a backup plan in case this would happen, and that they could always move to tribe.net if they so wished. So we'll see...

How Friendster Technical Staff Explains the Fuck-ups!!!!!

This is what I got after several of my messages containing the word "tribe.net" did not reach their destinations.
================================================
Our site is currently experiencing technical
difficulties due to high
usage,
primarily issues with database lag. As a result,
you may receive
e-mail
from Friendster notifying you that a friend has
sent you a new message,
but
you may be unable to access the message because
it does not appear in
your
Friendster inbox. You may also experience
problems when trying to
delete
messages from your inbox. In addition, you may
notice that changes you
have
made when editing your profile have not been
saved, photos you have
uploaded
may not be displayed, or you may not be able to
approve/reject/delete
pending friends, testimonials, messages, or
bulletin board posts. Even
though your profile/friends
list/testimonials/photos do not appear to
have
been updated, please be aware that our servers
have saved and stored
this
information. Finally, the e-mail server that
sends out the
verification
code you should receive after creating a new
profile or changing your
e-mail
address on your Friendster account is also
experiencing lag, however it
is
not necessary to verify your e-mail address to
log in to your
Friendster
account. You will still have access to all of
the site's features,
just
click on the "Skip" button when asked to verify
your e-mail address
when you
log in. We are working diligently on these
problems and hope to have
them
corrected soon. Since we opened our beta trial
to the world in March,
Friendster has surged in popularity to quickly
become one of the
busiest
sites on the Internet. This exponential growth
has overloaded our
servers.
We are adding dozens more servers to handle the
tremendous demand for
the
Friendster service. And please note: Friendster
will not be shutting
down
for any period of time. Also, we have no
intention of ever charging
people
to use Friendster's basic features. It will
always be free to join,
invite
friends, communicate with friends, browse
galleries and participate in
message boards. At some point, we may begin to
charge a minimal amount
for
advanced features, which don't exist yet, or
possibly for sending
private
messages to people who are not your friends.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

...by the way, did you know that when you try to post a message on Friendster via the bulletin board feature, that it scans for the word "fakester" and if it finds it, gives you an error message???

I had to retype Fakester as Fakestar tog et it to pass the automatic censor....

So maybe we can lure some of the most rebid Friendsters over to tribe.net with this little appeal, so that when the inevitable happens and we are shut down along with the fakesters, we have a place to repopulate :-) I'm *SO* evil.

Friendster Whore Tribe.

I hit the one million friendster mark!!!

"You are connected to 1,000,097 people in your Personal Network, through 47 friends."

Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo! Wee-hee!
(*Ryan does the happy friendster whore dance*)

To celebrate, I've decided to set up a group to promote and support the many fine keyboard athletes who practice the new sport of Friendster whoring. (Hey, if synchronized swimming can be a Olympic sport, then so can Friendster whoring.)

"Friendster whores - people who simply collect as many people as possible, including Fakesters." (Boyd, Danah. 'Types of Fakesters/Fraudsters', Connected Selves blog, Sept. 1, 2003)

But, of course, if I tried to set it up as a Fakester, it would get shut down. Therefore, Ryan invites all you Friendster whores to join Friendster Whores, a new tribe on Tribe.net You won't be able to post messages to this group until you register, but it's free (and it will very likely STAY free for the forseeable future, unlike Friendster....).

The address is http://friendsterwhore.tribe.net (note whore is singluar, not plural). Once you're in, select the Tribes tag, then Computers and Internet Tribes. Find the Friendster Whores tribe and click the Join button. You're in!!!

Spread the word to your fellow keyboard athletes!

--Ryan.
